History and heritage
An introduction to the history of Granollers, from the earliest evidence of settlement dating back 4,000 years until the local elections in June 2003.The first signs of life discovered in the Granollers area go back more than 4,000 years. The most important archaeological findings, however, are those of the Can Trullàs necropolis from the roman era. The first reference to the place name Granollers does not occur until 944, when it was referred to as ‘Granularios Subteriore’.From 1040 the first mention of the Granollers market appears.
Trade in Granollers
Granollers is today the major business centre in the eastern Vallès region. According to the Spanish Economic Annual Report published by the savings bank, La Caixa, there are 1,569 retail premises occupying a total space of 191,561 m2 and 406 wholesalers. The business community of Granollers currently plays a major role in the life of the city where it has become an important force for promoting social, cultural and sporting activities.
Walks around Granollers
The El Pedró route starts at the extension of the passeig de la Muntanya (The Mountain Way) and runs across the Serra de Llevant (eastern hill range) to the banks of the River Congost. This walk known as the Font del Ràdium (Radium Spring) Route, begins at Josep Oliveres Square in Palou (a place that is also part of the El Pedró Route), and runs along the Serra de Ponent (western Hill Chain).

One of the outstanding features of Granollers is its dynamism: it accounts for 20% of the businesses and employees in the eastern Vallès region; Thanks to the efforts of the Teatre Auditori de Granollers (Granollers Auditorium Theatre), Granollers boasts an ongoing program of artistic activities related to music, theatre, dance and art; forms part of the Xarxa de Ciutats Educadores (network of cities promoting lifelong education).The Fundació Hospital/Asil de Granollers (The Granollers Foundation Hospital and Nursing Home) is the main general hospital for the eastern Vallès region.
Geographic location of Granollers
Granollers, capital of the eastern Vallès region (Vallès Oriental), is situated on the Vallès plain, which forms part of the pre-coastal Catalan depression, at an average height of 148 metres above sea level. Vallès Oriental is a region with a wide range of different aspects. Mountain areas combined with large valleys full of small hills, cultivated fields, streams, towns and cities.
The Thursday market
The Thursday market has been and continues to be a fundamental part of the life of Granollers and has played a vital role in its development. The city’s perfect location makes it a meeting point, suitable for all types of business transactions. The Thursday market is diversified and is held in various streets and squares around the centre of the city every Thursday of the year. When Thursday falls on a public or local festival it is held on the Wednesday before.
Fairs and Local festivals
The Festa Major (Greater Celebration), that takes place during the week of the last Thursday in August, is based on the recovery of an old bet done in the city in year 1897. The Fira de l’Ascensió (Fair of the Ascent) is a multisectorial annual contest that shows the main new features of the industry, the services, the automotion, agriculture and the cattle ranch.

One of the features that make Granollers stand out from other mid-sized cities in Catalonia is the quantity and quality of the hotels available. Granollers currently has 8 hotels: 7 of which are either 3 or 4 star; there is one 2 star hotel and two 1 star hotels. In total, the city has 659 rooms and can accommodate 1,191 people.
